Back to the USA

Happy New Year all.
It was our last night in Canada last night and it was very cold, so we decided to miss the free entertainment and fireworks outside and headed indoors instead. We went to the cinema first and then had a late dinner. Dave and Mim went to see "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" and the rest of us saw "Grudge Match", which was very light hearted and funny starring Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone as old boxers who stage a rematch in their 60s.
Dinner was a nice restaurant downtown complete with a violinist and accordion player. Our waiter was married to a lady from Perth, so we fitted right in with the staff.
We celebrated with a midnight drink listening to the fireworks close by back at our accommodation.
Everyone was pretty tired this morning but it was up to be at the station by 8:30 to catch a train back into NY State. It was pretty busy today given the public holiday and everyone returning back to their homes I guess after the holiday season. The conductor was very helpful and we paid a little extra for them to load our luggage and board early to sit together.
We have just crossed the border without incident - it's much easier and civilized than the airports; and on route to our destination today at Albany, which is the capital of NY State. Its just a motel stop over for 1 night to break up the journey to Boston which is quite circuitous as you have to go to NYC first and change trains. So its a long trip in one go.
Tonight we will be having a quiet one. Herb's laptop died in Quebec City and we found a little repair shop in Montreal to get it fixed. The owner was a little fellow from China who had wires and electric gear everywhere - you would not have been able to stand it Dad...no order at all but he seemed to know where everything was. It was Herb's room at home on a bigger scale. If we lived in Montreal he would have had a job there for sure. They were kindred spirits. Hopefully tonight we can try loading some more photos for you to see. It takes a awhile sifting through everyone's pictures to select the best ones.
I went for an early morning run a few days ago and found a cemetery adjoining Mont Royal park above Montreal city. It was great being able to run without having to dodge traffic or pedestrians and was very peaceful. It was very large and I didn't see it all but found it strange that all the headstones were British names and a few Eastern European, Greek etc - no French surnames at all.
Hope you are all well and following your new year resolutions. Ours is to pack lighter!!!!
Signing off for now.
Mike

  1. Hi Mike and all! Sorry to have not been very responsive to all your blog posts. Have been a bit under the weather. Sorry to hear that you've been a bit the worse for wear too, Lis. It certainly sounds like you have not been letting it get in the way of enjoying yourself. Canada sounds awesome. I'm sure I would really appreciate the french culture in Quebec. Glad to hear you have been getting some skiing time in, Mike. You must feel a bit sad to be leaving Canada now. Then again, probably had enough of the ultra-cold. Stay safe for the rest of your trip! xo Pete

    1. Sorry to hear you have been unwell. Hope you are better now. Only about half hour away from Boston and the weather looks to be setting in so could be a little chilly on arrival. Lugging the bags up 5 flights (no lift) to our apartment should warm everyone up and lift their spirits!
      Take care
      Mike
